Hi guys, it’s Anya, and today I am doing another book review. I will be reviewing “The House on Mango Street.”

Book cover of “The House on Mango Street.”

The House on Mango Street” is a novel that talks about a young girl’s life in a new neighborhood. Her name is Esperanza and her family recently moved to Mango Street, where lots of good and bad things happen.

The way the author wrote this book is very different than other books I have read. Sandra Cisneros writes the book in short, 1–3 page chapters. Each of these chapters is about an event or character in the neighborhood, so the book is made up of short stories/events rather than connecting everything into a big story.

Another thing about the book is that is talks a lot about domestic violence and sexual assault. It shows how many young girls are treated unfairly in many different ways. I recently learned that this book is banned from some places because of the violence it depicts.

I don’t recommend giving this to anyone 5th grade or below because it has lots of events that young kids might not know about. I personally also do not like the way the author wrote the book, but I do think the overall message of feminism and the story of young girls is a good way to spread awareness about the terrible things that happen in this world.

I would rate this book a 7/10, and if you are interested in the book, here is the link to buy it from amazon : https://www.amazon.com/House-Mango-Street-Sandra-Cisneros/dp/0679734775/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3VHX2AGAXAOEF&dchild=1&keywords=the+house+on+mango+street&qid=1628019413&sprefix=the+house+on%2Caps%2C239&sr=8-1

That’s all I have for today! Adios!
